What Does the Alternator Do?
Unbeknownst to many, the battery’s function in a car is only as powerful as its surrounding components. The parts can be broken into two groups: starting and charging. The battery, starter motor, and starter solenoid are the parts that help start the car. Meanwhile, the alternator and voltage regulator supply the charging to the battery. The alternator is akin to a generator in that it charges the battery and routes electrical power to the various electrical systems in the car, such as the dashboard lights and headlights. The alternator is actually attached to the engine and powered by the engine’s serpentine belt or v-belt. It is a maintenance-free component, meaning it does not require routine service to run properly. However, there are instances where it can fail or become compromised and require alternator repair.
What Are the Signs of a Bad Alternator?
While problems with the alternator aren’t as common as problems with other car parts, it’s important to be informed on what to look out for. If there is an issue with the alternator or battery system, the battery icon will illuminate in the dashboard. Because this warning light can mean a myriad of issues within the system, it’s important to stop by at your earliest convenience for a precise diagnosis. Another potential alternator repair symptom is when the dashboard lights or headlights dim when you are idle but return to normal brightness once the engine is revved. If you hear a growling or whining noise or smell burning rubber or hot wire, the problem most likely resides with your alternator. We use top-notch technology for testing and will be able to determine what exactly is going on after a full evaluation.
